Shortly after stardate 3451.9, Chapel provided rehabilitation to Lieutenant Uhura, whose mind had been wiped by hostile space probe Nomad. Uhura made full recovery of mental faculties. Shortly after stardate 3478, Chapel worked closely with Science Officer Spock and visiting Dr. Janet Wallace to find a serum against a hyper-aging disease contracted on Gamma Hydra IV by several landing party members, including Enterprise Captain Kirk. After stardate 3842, Chapel was attending nurse at innovative cryogenic open-heart surgery performed by Dr. McCoy on Vulcan ambassador Sarek. The operation included blood donated by his son, Spock , who was taking an experimental medication to increase his blood replacement and production rate. In 2268 Chapel assisted Dr. McCoy in treating landing party members whose red blood cells had been depleted by a dikironium cloud creature on planet Tycho IV. In 2269, Chapel participated in research with Dr. McCoy to find an antidote to the properties of Elaysian women’s tears. An antidote was successfully discovered. In 2269, Chapel and Lieutenant Uhura were abducted from the Enterprise and telepathically controlled, forced to provide humiliating entertainments, along with Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, for the telekinetic inhabitants of the Platonius. The party successfully escaped. In 2270, after the completion of the first five-year mission of the Enterprise, Chapel returned to Starfleet Medical and received an M.D. She was named as chief medical officer of the refitted Enterprise, under Captain Will Decker, until the return of Dr. McCoy during the crisis with V’Ger. She continued to serve as staff physician on that ship during second five-year mission, 2271-76. By 2286, Chapel promoted to Commander, director of Starfleet Emergency Operations.
